Theatre Cedar Rapids (TCR) invites directors to submit applications for our 2026–2027 Grandon Studio season. Located in our intimate black box performance space, the Grandon Studio season is dedicated to bold storytelling, inventive theatricality, actor-centered collaboration, and emotionally engaging audience experiences.
For the 2026–2027 season, TCR seeks directors with imaginative storytelling approaches, collaborative leadership skills, and passion for creating compelling work in an intimate environment. We are most interested in directors who have a demonstrated commitment to the craft of directing and who will create a positive and educational experience for our volunteer performers. Director stipend amounts will be be included in offers.
Note: Top Dog/Under Dog has a director in place and is not an open opportunity. We are not seeking submissions for our auditorium productions.
The Grandon Studio provides unique opportunities for immersive storytelling, inventive staging, and close audience connection. Directors should be prepared to work creatively within the flexibility and limitations of a black box environment while fostering inclusive, respectful, and artistically adventurous rehearsal spaces.
Applicants should consider these parameters when communicating artistic perspectives and production vision:
All dates except Opening Night are subject to change.
Auditions will happen in the late summer/early fall, pending director and team availability. Once the selection of directors is finalized, TCR will make the determination if auditions will be held as a single season-wide event or scheduled individually for each production.
Questions about the opportunity or submission process may be forwarded to madi.knaack@theatrecr.org.

Called "the funniest farce ever written," Noises Off is a celebrated, fast-paced peek backstage at a touring theatre company's disastrous production of Nothing On, where unfortunately, almost nothing is going right. Packed with slamming doors, missed cues, and flying sardines, this Olivier Award-winning comedy offers a hilarious, chaotic look at life behind the curtain.
Masterfully constructed, Noises Off is the “most dexterously realized comedy ever about putting on a comedy” (NY Times). Playwright and novelist Michael Frayn (Democracy, Copenhagen) devised the concept for Noises Off while watching another one of his plays from backstage. “It was funnier from behind than in front and I thought that one day I must write a farce from behind.” With an ingenious structure that showcases the action both onstage and off, Noises Off premiered in London in 1982, garnering immediate acclaim. NY Times critic Frank Rich, who saw the premiere as well as the Broadway production in 1983, proclaimed the work “The funniest play written in my lifetime.” Join us for an evening of rollicking hilarity and virtuosic timing!
Content Advisory: Contains comedic violence and sexual situations.
"A spectacularly funny, peerless backstage farce... a festival of delirium." – New York Times
"Michael Frayn's ridiculous farce-within-a-farce still has the power to make an auditorium lose itself in laughter." – WhatsOnStage

Hailed as the perfect musical comedy, this award-winning classic gambles with luck and love under the bright lights of Broadway. Guys and Dolls is about two big-city gamblers and the women who love them. It tells the overlapping stories of high-roller Sky Masterson, who falls in love with mission worker Sarah Brown, and lovable rapscallion Nathan Detroit, engaged for fourteen years to Miss Adelaide, a headliner at the Hot Box Club. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder (a loyal fish), Scuttle (a confused seagull), and Sebastian (a music-loving crab) to restore order under the sea.
