TCR Announces Auditions for The Thanksgiving Play

Madi Knaack

TCR announces open auditions for Larissa FastHorse’s The Thanksgiving Play, directed by Patrick Du Laney, opening November 7th in TCR’s Grandon Studio.

ABOUT THE THANKSGIVING PLAY

Four (very) well-intentioned theatre people walk into an elementary school. The work at hand: a Thanksgiving pageant that won’t ruffle any feathers. What could possibly go wrong? The Thanksgiving Play is rambunctious, thorny and not altogether politically correct, and is sure to serve up the hypocrisies of woke America on a big, family-style, platter. Come get ya some.

ABOUT REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES

Rehearsals begin at the end of September, 2024. Rehearsals will typically be held five days per week, to be scheduled weeknights and potentially one weekend day, to be determined based on cast availability and conflicts. Tech rehearsal will take place on the Saturday or Sunday prior to opening.

Performances take place November 7th – December 1st, 2024. See all ticketed performance dates here. Some performances may be added, exact dates pending cast availability.

Actors are eligible to receive a volunteer honoraria of $25 per performance for all ticketed shows and any additional performances. TCR will supply meals for longer rehearsal days and any two show days (if applicable). Each cast member will receive two comp tickets, a show t-shirt, and drink tickets / catered meal at the opening night celebration in the Linge Lounge. Volunteers are not required to strike.

ABOUT AUDITIONS AND VIDEO SUBMISSIONS

  • Audition Dates/Times: September 27th, 2024, 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
  • Callbacks – September 28th 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. We will let you know via email if you will be called back. Callbacks will involve reading sides in arranged pairings. Not receiving a callback does not mean you haven’t been cast. All auditioners will be notified via email.
  • FILL OUT AND AUDITION FORM
  • On audition day arrive at the TCR lobby by 6:30pm and you will be directed to the audition space.
  • If you cannot attend auditions, we will accept a video submission, conflicts and any additional materials you wish to submit. We would prefer to see you in person for callbacks if possible, even if you submit a video. Contact Madi Knaack (madi.knaack@theatrecr.org) with questions about auditions or for instructions about how to submit a video audition.

WHAT TO PREPARE

Please prepare to read sides from the script. We will provide printed sides at the audition, and you may be asked to read more than one character’s lines. Director’s Note:  The Thanksgiving Play is true satire, not a Saturday Night Live Sketch.  Everyone in the play is doing their best, or trying to do their best.  Play scenes truthfully, and work from positive energy (until you can’t anymore!)

General Audition Sides:

A perusal copy of the script is available HERE.

  • Pages 12-15, starting with Caden “I suggest we begin four thousand years ago” through Jaxton “mine too.”
  • Pages 38-40, starting with Alicia “I’m not that smart” through Alicia “Got it”
  • Pages 42-43, top of scene through Jaxton “she doesn’t have to like everything.”

ROLES AVAILABLE

  • LOGAN: Female-identified. Late 20’s – Early 40’s, caucasian looking, a high school drama teacher and former LA actor.  Earnest about theatre and proving herself.
  • JAXTON: Male-identified. Late 20’s – Early 40’s, caucasian looking, yoga practitioner/actor. Politically correct to a fault, a big one. He’s that confident guy everyone loves, but his “wokeness” takes logical weird turns..
  • ALICIA: Female-identified, Brunette. Mid 20’s – Early 30’s, caucasian looking but has looks that would have been cast as ethnic in 1950s movies. Simplicity itself. Sexy and hot, but not bright.
  • CADEN: Male-identified. Caucasian looking, the academic. Awkward elementary school history teacher with dramatic aspirations but no experience.
