J. David Carey to Retire; David Maier to Serve as TCR Finance and Administration Director

Christina Kroemer

David Maier has been named the Finance and Administration Director at Theatre Cedar Rapids to fill the upcoming vacancy created by the retirement of J. David Carey later this year.

After 27 years of TCR involvement both on and off the stage, J. David Carey announced his retirement effective the end of 2018. Throughout his career, Carey served in many capacities at the theatre, including Marketing Director, Associate Director, and most recently, Finance and Administration Director. Carey has been deeply involved in numerous TCR productions over the years, participating as an actor, improviser, and stage director. His engagement and commitment to TCR spans beyond his 27 years of employment: Carey’s father and grandmother were founding board members for the institution, and his first time volunteering as an actor on stage was at age 10.

David Maier will assume the Finance and Administration Director position later this year.  Maier has spent the past decade with PepsiCo in Chicago, serving most recently as Senior Finance Director for corporate audit activities. Previous work includes Finance Director and lead audit and accounting positions with Honeywell International, AT&T, Sara Lee Corporation, and KPMG. His background in the arts includes serving on the boards of multiple performing arts organizations, including About Face Theatre and the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus, as well as Revival Theatre Company in Cedar Rapids. Maier is relocating to Cedar Rapids this year with his husband, Cedar Rapids native Matthew McGrane. Maier is a Certified Public Accountant and holds his MBA from Northwestern University and BS from Purdue.

“We congratulate J. David on his upcoming retirement, and we will certainly miss his institutional knowledge and his passion for TCR. J. David is a talented colleague and friend to the TCR staff, board, trustees, and many of the organization’s volunteers,” said TCR Executive Director Katie Hallman. “We are supremely fortunate for his dedicated service for so many years, just as we are now fortunate to have found a new Finance and Administration Director in David Maier. David Maier possesses a truly unique combination of extensive financial background and a deep love of the arts that will serve TCR into its next chapter. We look forward to welcoming him to the staff later this year.”

“It makes it infinitely easier to step down knowing the reigns are passing to such a highly qualified and passionate manager as David Maier and I look forward to seeing what comes next in TCR’s remarkable history,” said Carey as he reflects on his departure.

“What an exciting time to join TCR as it celebrates its 85thseason!” remarked Maier.  “J. David’s commitment to TCR is an inspiration, and I look forward to leveraging my finance skills and passion for the performing arts to support the creation of live theatre that can be enjoyed by everyone in our community.”
