Volunteers sandbagging at Theatre Cedar Rapids to prepare for the Flood of 2016
I am so relieved to be writing you from a dry Theatre Cedar Rapids. After experiencing the devastating flood waters in 2008, we were heavy hearted when we learned that Cedar Rapids would again be impacted by the same natural disaster that displaced us and so many of our community neighbors for years afterward. Some permanently. We feel so immensely grateful and fortunate to have escaped damage this time around. However, what we are quickly learning is that we will not escape the repercussions of this flood. We had to close our doors through a half a dozen scheduled performances, and the economic impacts could have long-term consequences for our theatre if we are not able to regain lost ground very soon.
I am writing today to ask for your help. Please come to the theatre to take in a show. If you typically visit us for a show once or twice a year, please consider making one of those times in the next 90 days. If you’re not busy this weekend, please join us for Sister Act or Studio Cabaret. The impact of ticket purchases at Theatre Cedar Rapids is significant. I cannot overstate that enough. Each and every patron who invests in TCR with their purchase of tickets to performances at TCR is directly impacting our ability to thrive as a vibrant arts organization in the heart of Cedar Rapids.
If you find yourself with some extra time on your hands, please also consider helping those who were directly affected by flood waters as they begin the tedious and labor-intensive process of rebuilding. The strength and solidarity exhibited by Cedar Rapidians these last days has been nothing short of extraordinary and TCR is so proud to call this community home. Let’s remember to take care of each other in these coming weeks whether through direct volunteering, giving business where it’s needed, or just showing kindness to those around you. We truly are all in this together.
